Carbon Tax - What will it COST YOU?
If the federal government has its way, you'll be paying extra taxes for 'carbon' by 2011. ... Don't forget - these are payments for carbon dioxide not 'carbon'!
Despite the government calling it "carbon pollution", this isn't about 'pollution' as we would think of pollution. It isn't about black sooty particles or toxic waste, it is about carbon dioxide - a colourless 'gas' that we breathe out and plants and trees love to absorb in order to grow. Why aren't we dealing with real pollution? Naturally, we support a genuine reduction of real pollution.
The IPCC, Al Gore and the governments have said that carbon dioxide is the cause of 'global warming'. Many respected climate/environment scientists dispute this. [eg: the Manhattan Declaration]
And now the government wants to tax you because of it! The government might say it isn't a tax - but in effect that's exactly what it is! [If you haven't read our first article on global warming, please read it - click here.]
The federal government has put its proposed legislation for its' 'Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme' into the parliament - they are now trying to get the Opposition and the Independents and Greens in the Senate to support their planned regime. It doesn't seem to be working - the Liberals say they want it delayed until after the Copenhagen climate meetings later this year and the Greens think the scheme isn't 'green' enough! What the government is NOT telling you is what it will COST YOU!
So what will it cost you? At a conference on 'Natural Climate Change' that I attended in late May 2009, Professor Bob Carter estimated the cost to be about $3,054 per family per year (based on $30/tonne of CO2). Bob Carter is a palaeontologist, marine geologist and environmental scientist who opposes the current global warming agenda promoted by the IPCC. Ross Garnaut's Report said that it would cost $250/t to remove the carbon dioxide for recycling or permanent sequestration. At that rate Bob Carter estimates the cost could be $25,455/family/yr!
What 'benefit' will we get from that? A possible reduction of 0.0001oC in temperature!
That's just the direct cost.
There will be indirect costs too... Bob Carter says the indirect costs include "unemployment caused by replacing coal-fired with wind power, transitional economic costs (estimated in the U.K. as roughly 1% of GNP), contributions towards the huge aid sums now being demanded by 3rd world countries (another 1% of GNP) and the economic growth foregone because of the whole exercise (Australian treasury estimate, 1.8% of GNP)."
Bob has analysed the cost of the government's proposed carbon trading scheme and says that the indirect costs could more than double that amount. Read his interview detailing these costs, along with similar estimates for schemes proposed by other nations - click here.
What is the price for 'carbon' used in these figures? Bob Carter's estimate of $3054 per family per year is based on a price of $30 per tonne of carbon dioxide. The Garnaut Review proposed a transition price of $20/tonne in 2010 plus 4% per year + CPI after that. However the Garnaut Review also said it will require "a cost of A$250 per tonne of CO2 to take greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, for recycling or permanent sequestration" (Supplementary Report:25). (Source: Tim Curtin's report on the Garnaut Review.) Mr Rudd's proposed legislation suggests a price of $10/tonne for the first year and 'market prices' after that.
What detrimental effect will this have on families? We already face the repayment of a huge government debt in our nation. If the 'Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme' is implemented it will add to the debt of the citizens - that is, increased debt and costs for all of us!
ACTION: Do you want to pay these carbon taxes?
YOU NEED to write to the the 12 Senators in your own State. It would also be good to write to the Liberal and National leaders as well as Independent Nick Xenophon and Family First Senator Steve Fielding.
Please ask them to vote against the government's proposed Emissions Trading Scheme (the CPRS). Ask them not to support the 'emissions reduction targets' (5% and 25% if the 'world' agrees) that have been set by the government.
