Activist group GetUp!

GetUp! claims to be a 'non-party-political' group.... but one of its founders was Bill Shorten, now a federal ALP Member of Parliament.GetUp_logo

We've regularly reported on the left-wing political campaigning of GetUp!
In November 2008, we wrote in our journal about GetUp! and its activities.
Here's the article we wrote, with a recent update about the campaigns they are currently running:
Politics 2.0 - GetUp! and Avaaz

Andrew Bolt has a column this week on the current campaign they are running supporting the proposed carbon tax.
Their letter to members encourages GetUp! members to write to companies, asking their views on climate change and encouraging them to resign their membership of the Australian Food and Grocery Council - because the AFGC is opposing the 'carbon tax'.

Andrew points out that GetUp! claims to have 570,000 members - but he notes that you get to be a 'member' if you have ever signed one of their petitions! Their last annual report shows that just 17,295 people actually gave them any money!

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz complained to the Australian Electoral Commission about GetUp!'s campaign activities during the last federal election.
Read Eric's speech to the Senate about his concerns and about his complaint to the AEC.
In February 2011, he commended the AEC on their action, in response to his complaint, thanking them for cracking down on "misleading and deceptive activity".
Read report.

Senator Abetz has also given a speech to the David Davies Memorial Dinner about GetUp! - read it here.
