12 October 2004 - Election Update The election is now behind us. With the Howard government returned to office with an increased majority, the nation can settle down to a period of stability. Congratulations to Mr Howard.
With the government appearing to have gained a majority in the Senate - in their own right, or with Family First - the push for homosexual rights at the federal level will be curtailed. The Sydney Star Observer said it all with their headline "Election result halts gay rights". Thankfully, it appears that none of the Democrats Senators were re-elected - especially Senator Brian Greig, an open homosexual from Western Australia. Even though the Greens will probably have Senators elected, it appears that they will not hold the balance of power.
At this stage Family First look set to win a Senate seat in Victoria due to their preference deals. They could also win Senate seats in Tasmania, Qld and South Australia, though these are less likely. They could even hold the balance of power in the Senate.
