25 August 2003 - National Day of Prayer planned for September 6

A National Day of Prayer for the drought and for Australia has been called for the first Saturday in Spring, 6 September. Drought has affected our nation and we desperately need more rain across Australia, on our farms and in our water catchment areas. Many people are in critical need of water - the drought has affected many farmers and communities. The drought in Australia is not over - some people still have no water.

All Christians are being called to pray (and fast as led) from the Prime Minister to the smallest child.

Liz Spicer, one of our readers from Kyabram, has responded to the call to have a National Day of Prayer for the nation and the drought. God has laid this on her heart and people are responding from across the nation.

She says "Let us pray together as the body of Christ in unity. Give God the glory and receive the commanded blessing."

So gather together in large groups - or in twos and threes. Meet in halls or homes or parks. Pray for our nation and for rain!

In Kyabram, Christians have been meeting once a month for the past year in the local park to pray for rain and this area has received rain!!! In the Mallee area, where a naked rain dance was held last year, very little rain has fallen.

Liz refers to 2 Chronicles 7:13 - 15
The Lord says, "When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place."

23 July 2003 - Uniting church votes to allow the ordination of practising homosexuals

The National Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia has voted (on 17 July) to allow presbyteries to ordain practising homosexuals as ministers in the church. Since the Sexuality Task Force released its report on sexuality more than six years ago, there has been pressure on the Assembly (Perth 1997, Adelaide 2000) to allow practising homosexuals to be ordained. This decision threatens to split the church - some evangelicals who believe in the authority of Scripture have said they cannot work within this church under this decision. Rev Fred Nile has announced his resignation as a Uniting Church minister.
