The Victorian government's lower house, the Legislative Assembly, passed the Act giving more rights to homosexuals in 14 laws last Wednesday, 17 October 2001. All National Party members, Independents Russell Savage and Craig Ingram and Liberal Robert Clark voted against the Bill. Several Liberals abstained from the vote (sat on the fence!) and Inga Peulich was the Acting Speaker so could not vote. No amendments were passed, so this Bill, if passed in the Legislative Council, would give 'parental' rights to same sex partners regarding children who are involved in cases in the Childrens Court or are under 'Care and Protection' orders. The Bill now goes to the Upper House. Write to your Upper House MPs today! Ask them to protect our children and vote against this Bill, especially the section relating to the Children and Young Person's Act.

The Victorian Labor Government has introduced into Parliament a Bill that gives another fourteen changes that will further endorse homosexual relationships. Another 14 Acts of Parliament will be changed to further recognise 'domestic partners'. The term 'domestic partner' includes 'same-sex' couples. The most disturbing change is to the Children and Young Persons Act 1989 which will include a same-sex 'domestic partner' of the father or mother of a child within the definition of 'parent' under the Act. This means that a woman' s ex-husband's 'boyfriend' would be recognised as a 'parent' of the child. Send a strong message to your three local MPs today! These changes could be voted on in Parliament this week!
