Increase in STDs

Just consider these recent media reports about the increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

* Chlamydia rates have more than tripled in Australia over the past decade - with 61,000 cases in 2009! Sexual health experts are calling for a free national screening program. Read report.

* In Newcastle there is a significant increase in the number of people diagnosed with Gonorrhoea in the early part of 2010 - by mid-march there had been 41 cases for 2010 compared to 9 for the same period in 2009. Read report.

* The World Health Organisation has warned of a rise in "untreatable" gonorrhoea, after a spate of multi-resistant cases were detected including in Australia. That means that the 'last-line' treatment for the disease doesn't work in some cases... read more.

* In March, The Australianreported "PROMISCUOUS backpackers who flock to Australia, get drunk and have unprotected sex are to be targeted by health authorities in a bid to control rising rates of sexually transmitted diseases.". An 8-year study found that a culture of booze and 'unprotected sex' was leading to an increase in STDs amongst backpackers who are passing on diseases to Australians.

Meanwhile it is 50 years since the introduction of the contraceptive pill. . .
