Christians described as 'hate groups'

Christian groups are increasingly being described as 'hate groups' because they oppose the acceptance of homosexuality. We know what it's like - that's how we are sometimes described!Mouth_taped_man_800x600_

In the USA, the Southern Poverty Law Centre, an organisation that lists various 'hate groups' - including the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi groups, has now added 13 Christian organisationsto their 'hate group' list! The SPLC said it wasn't just because the groups said it was "unbiblical" or they opposed same-sex 'marriage' but because they said false things about homosexuality.

In response, the Family Research Council has run full page open letter advertisements in US papers, calling on the SPLC to "Start debating - stop hating". In other words, to stop labelling  groups rather than dealing with the issues. (read report). Read the FRC ad - click here.
They've set up a special website: Start Debating - Stop Hating and are calling for people to sign the Open Letter.

Meanwhile, Warren Throckmorton has called on Christian groups to be accurate in what they say and to respond to the criticisms made by the SPLC. Read his post.

Look Who Made the Hate List  Dec 7, 2010
"Since the 1960s, the Southern Poverty Law Center has served as a self-appointed watchdog to track hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Aryan Nation. Though its efforts have doubtless been helpful in certain areas, the SPLC's recent (November 24, 2010) list now includes as "hate groups" thirteen upstanding Christian organizations, accused of propagating "known falsehoods" about gays and lesbians. . ."
