Carbon tax and 'green' power
The proposed carbon tax is filling the airwaves at present - Julia Gillard is promising to introduce a carbon tax even though she promised before the election that her government would not do so.
Of course, it is really a tax on carbon dioxide, or as Tim Blair recently noted, a tax on oxygen - since carbon dioxide is CO2, one part carbon to TWO parts oxygen.
Since most things use electricity for their production, not only will electricty increase but so will the price of all the goods we use!
The Australian reports today that "ENERGY producers would need to spend at least $30.5 billion on power stations that use gas and other clean technologies over the next decade to comply with even a modest emissions reduction target."
Ross Garnaut recently noted that the income from the carbon tax will be 'redistributed' to the poor. That will happen here in Australia - but also internationally with Australian taxpayers contributing to the UN's $100 billion fund to help 'poor nations' adapt to 'climate change' (Read report).
Meanwhile, a major rally against the proposed tax was held in Canberra yesterday (23 March 2011). Thousands of people came from all over Australia to rally outside Parliament House. Some people complained that Tony Abbott spoke at the rally and that some people had some offensive words on signs.... Various people such as Labor's Greg Combet and the Greens' Bob Brown insisted Tony Abbott apologise and distance himself from the signs. Andrew Bolt notes that the same people haven't complained about other offensive signs, rallies etc... including some against previous Prime Minister John Howard (read report).
