Media ReleaseWednesday, 3 November 2004 Christian groups echo Senators' calls for end to Medicare AbortionsMedicare funding for abortions should cease say Christian groups throughout the country s Peter Stokes CEO of Salt Shakers who agrees with newly elected Queensland Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce and new Special Minister for State Senator Eric Abetz's backing for an end to Medicare funding of terminations except where the mother's life is in danger. Salt Shakers CEO Peter Stokes called for the abolition of Medicare funding for abortion in a Christian Values Checklist distributed on the eve of Election 2004. "While pundits of the left may decry proposals such as these as the shifting sands of the new political climate of the right, it's time serious issues such as abortion were brought to the fore again," Mr Stokes said. "We believe this is just the start of something extraordinary that will happen in this nation over the next few years if we help make it happen. This is the start of the moral clean-up of our nation," he said. "Abortion is one of those rare medical procedures that destroys rather than save lives," Mr Stokes said. "Sometimes Medicare provides the convenience for a quick abortion. If people were forced to fund their own abortions, it might make them stop and reflect on what they're doing, destroying life, rather than just swiftly handing a Medicare card over. "Thousands of Christians around Australia would support Senator Abetz' convictions on this issue." Salt Shakers Research and Information Services - a division of Salt Shakers Inc.
