Media releaseFor immediate release, 22 November 2004 Abstinence key to AIDS decline in lead up to World AIDS DaySalt Shakers applauded John Howard for his "No nonsense' approach to AIDS. Too much political correctness and self-interest has been clouding the AIDS and STD issue for too long. HIV/AIDS in Australia remains predominantly a homosexual problem (over 80%), as in most western countries. In Africa and Asia it is largely promiscuous sexual behaviour. "Across the world it is encouraged by the tolerance of prostitution and so called 'adult' shops along with the promotion of 'harm minimisation' strategies in the form of safe-sex sex-education rather than abstinence. This has allowed irresponsible behaviour to go unchecked," said Salt Shakers CEO Peter Stokes. "If 'no nonsense' means telling the truth then indeed it is way overdue," he said. Mr Stokes said the promotion of 'abstinence before marriage and monogamy' as the first priorities, and then responsible sexual behaviour, was what proved successful in drastically reversing the AIDS/STD growth rate in Uganda. It should be the benchmark for all programs. "Homosexual sex is risky sexual behaviour not simply another form of 'lifestyle' and it should be discouraged, not encouraged as it so often is today by both governments and the media in Australia." Peter Stokes is available for interview on 0413 084 145. Media contact: Salt Shakers is a Christian ethics, education, research and action group.
