Media releaseFor immediate release, 16 December 2004 Freedom of Speech: The Verdict is LoomingThe verdict in the long awaited case of complaint of religious vilification by the Islamic Council of Victoria and three Muslim converts against Catch the Fire Ministries, Pastor Danny Nalliah, and Pastor Daniel Scot at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal (VCAT) will be handed down tomorrow, Friday December 17 at 9.30am. Melbourne-based Christian ethics group, Salt Shakers, has been documenting the case since its inception. The group's CEO Peter Stokes said he was disappointed that 'judgement day' was only a week before Christmas. "We're concerned about the timing of this verdict. It's being handed down on the last sitting day of the Tribunal for 2004," Mr Stokes said. "This has been perhaps the most controversial case to pass through the tribunal and we're a bit disappointed that the verdict is being handed down now when this decision has been expected since mid-August. Here we are almost five months later and just a week before Christmas," he said. "This case is being watched by Christians and governments internationally - none more so than in Britain where similar legislation to Victoria's has been proposed."
