Victorian Police Commissioner to March in homosexual Pride March in 2002

(25 July 2001, SALT SHAKERS E-News)

Completed campaign...
Note: July 2007
The Police Commissioner Christine Nixon marched in the pride march in 2002.
She has NOT marched in any subsequent pride march in Melbourne - however the police have continued to march in uniform each year since.

RESULT: The Police Commissioner replied to our letters, re-iterating her decision to march in this parade and allow police officers to wear uniform.

When the Police Association held a march and protest recently, and planned to wear uniforms, she asked thenm repeatedly NOT to wear uniform. It seems like a double standard to us!

Please continue to write to the Chief Commissioner.

Victoria's new Police Commissioner Christine Nixon announced on 24 July 2001 that she would march in uniform in next year's homosexual midsumma festival. She also announced that she will march with police officers.

The Herald Sun vote line asked the question 'Should Commissioner Nixon lead the police contingent in the gay parade?'

The result: NO 3,434 (86.3%) (13.7%)

Both The Age and The Australian had Editorials suggesting that she was right to agree to march and that this was in line with community thinking!!

We believe it is totally inappropriate for her to participate in this event.

We also call on you to write to the Police Commissioner, Christine Nixon, concern at her aligning herself so openly with the homosexual community and ask, as we have done, if she will march with every other minority group in this way.

ACTION

Write to: Police Commissioner Christine Nixon, Victorian Police Centre, 637 Flinders St, Melbourne, Vic 3005

FAX: (03) 9247 6869

If you are holding a parade or march, or are holding another event, then perhaps you should invite her to particpate on the basis that she is prepared to be involved with other groups.

SALT SHAKERS issued a Press Release on this matter.
